Why is Education necessary when the Holy Spirit is teaching all things?

Some believe according what is said in John 14: 26 that theological education is not necessary, but the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. If this is true why is theological education necessary?

In John 14: 26, Jesus was speaking directly to His disciples. The great Master—the Lord Jesus Christ—educated the disciples for three and half years. Jesus taught them great theological lessons. The disciples’ skills and attitudes were formed through His teaching. They were spiritually and mentally prepared for the work. The disciples diligently learned under the teachings of Christ. It was to such learned disciples, that Jesus said, “the Holy Spirit will teach you all things.” For example: Peter was an uneducated fisherman, yet after being with Christ for three and a half years of learning, he advised his readers to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3: 18). Peter recognized the necessity of growth in the grace and knowledge.

Another reason why education is necessary: God is omniscient. He knows everything. God makes His judgments and decisions according His knowledge of everything. Therefore, God’s judgments are just and correct, because He makes them according to His great knowledge. We, as human beings, are not omniscient—not all knowing.  We are limited and broken. We need not only God’s grace, but also additional information and knowledge in order to make proper decisions. We need to find information and knowledge from outside sources in order to make wise decisions, which are healthy for our development and formation. This is another reason why education is necessary for Christian leaders. This is why LBCS is keen on developing students’ research skills, so that they may gather adequate information for their spiritual and mental formation.

What Kind of Educational Standard is Necessary for Christian Leaders Today?

The Bible repeatedly says that God is good. Therefore, everything he provides is good for human health and development. We are made in the image of God. God expects us to display similar nature. In everything we do, we must show the goodness and excellence of God. The ministry we do must display this excellence. The preaching and teaching we do must be sound and good for the spiritual health of the church. The education we provide must display God’s character, which is good and sound. LBCS believes in excellence in education and training.

In Luke 2: 52 we read that Jesus grew up and increased in wisdom and in favor with God and people. As a human being, Jesus displayed a holistic development. He grew up physically, intellectually, spiritually, socially and emotionally. Similarly, Christian education must provide opportunities for holistic development. A fully developed human being brings glory to God.

Introducing New Curriculum of LBCS

Education and training of pastors and church leaders must be holistic in nature. That is, Christian leaders must be developed physically, spiritually, intellectually, socially and emotionally, including the development of their knowledge, attitudes, and ministry skills. These objectives can be achieved in a residential training setting. In order to do so, LBCS conducted an island wide research on theological education. Based on the findings of this research, we have made significant revision to our curriculum for holistic training of pastors and leaders in Sri Lanka.

This new curriculum for holistic development will be introduced at LBCS Peradeniya from next year—2017. Therefore, we will not be recruiting students during the middle of the year. Please send in your application for new candidates before the beginning of the year 2017.

Thank you!
